Critique versus Criticism

People often confuse critique with criticism but they are quite different in definition and intent. The definitions for both are shown here:       Critique is to “evaluate (a theory or practice) in a detailed and analytical way.”               Criticism means to “the expression of disapproval of someone or something on the basis of perceived faults or mistakes.”         As you can see the definitions are quite different as are the intents for both words. When someone offers to critique your work their intention is to provide feedback and to improve it so that your work is a better quality. They are looking for good and want to provide ways for you to make your work better quality. Criticism is about looking for fault. Most people that review your work are not looking for fault. If they are, then look for different reviewers. So you have written an assessment and you want to gain feedback. When you ask someone to read it, you are asking them to critique it. Their intent is to improve your work. Now the time they take to do this shows that they respect you. If your work comes back covered with markings and comments it means that they have spent their valuable time critiquing your work and providing feedback on ways you can improve it. If they only put a tick in the bottom of the page then they did not spend much time and you do not get much feedback. Remember, it is your name that is on the work when it is submitted, so this person is merely helping you to look better.         There are lots of people that can review your work and provide feedback: teachers, tutors, coaches, parents, other family members, peers and fellow students in online forums. Find your reviewers and use them often. I would like you to consider changing your perspective about receiving feedback. Before the year starts and throughout the first term, it’s is good to consider where your Teen’s head is at. What is their attitude towards the new school year? Are they excited or distressed about school? If they are excited that is easy to deal with, you can join in with their excitement. If they are distressed you might want to sit and talk about what is causing their distress and see if there is anything you can do to support them. Are they confident or anxious about the upcoming year? If they are anxious you can calm them and provide encouragement and perspective about your expectations and clarify their expectations. Are they focused or unfocused? Focus is great but what are they focused on? It could just be the social side of school which is a great and important factor but so is the academic side. Many teens are very focused on what is happening outside of school, whether it be friends, sport, shopping or gaming. This is natural but as they get further into first term they need to regain some balance between what is important inside and outside of school. If they are not focused on the academic side of their studies it is often that they lack relevance of why that is important. Talk to them about how better results provide better opportunities. As our teens head back to school, it is important for them to click back in.  Some teens are able to click in during the first week, and they find the transition back to school easier than those that take more time to settle into the school year. Part of the issue is the change of routine, so the faster you establish the school routine, the easier and faster it is for the teens to settle. What is their emotional state? Are they excited or anxious? Both of these emotions actually provide similar physical responses in the human body, it is just our attitudes and perspectives that determine how we frame the emotion.     If they are anxious listen to find out what is causing the anxiety and try to unpack the underlying issues so that you can bring them to the surface and deal with them, one by one.       If they are excited, it is easier to deal with. It would be great if you could focus this positive energy into some goal setting for the year.  What do they want to achieve this year? Write it down and review it each term, or more often if possible.       Finally, on a more practical level, make sure everything is ready for the new school year: uniforms, school bags, stationery supplies, and that all the filing and archiving is done, both for physical files and for their online...

It is time to close off last year and start fresh for the new school year.  For your high school students, here are 5 things they can do to close off the previous school year:   Unpack their school bag.  Empty it out, air it, give it a clean and put everything away. Gather, sort and file away all the paper from the previous school year.  They should only keep what they value. Archive all soft copies and clean up their hard drive so they have room for the new year’s work. Clean their room and physical work spaces. Review their report cards from last year.  Learn what they can from the marks and comments, then put them away.   By doing these quick actions that should only take an hour or so, the previous year is reviewed and packed away allowing your high school student to focus on the year to come.  ...
